The ex-president is trying to intimidate Nikki Haley into abandoning the GOP presidential race. Trump’s brisk assertion of his growing power as the likely nominee is a characteristic dismantling of constraints that echoes his behavior in office. But she provoked him by refusing to quickly fold her campaign and endorse him like other GOP candidates, including Florida Gov. But the disdain toward Haley from Trump world is remarkable. It would have essentially joined the party’s forces with Trump while an election involving a rival was still taking place.

Trump's campaign aimed to rally support among GOP officials in S.C. early in the primary season. Early last year, Trump sought to showcase his strength in South Carolina, the home state of Republican presidential candidate and former Gov. Pamela Evette and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson are also planning to attend to event, among other top GOP officials, per The Times. Haley does have some institutional support among South Carolina Republicans, with Rep. Ralph Norman and former South Carolina Republican Party chair Katon Dawson backing her campaign, among others. But the former UN ambassador is banking on a robust showing in New Hampshire on Jan. 23, along with a strong performance in South Carolina, in order to remain viable ahead of Super Tuesday.

Nikki Haley Is Gaining Ground - The New York Times

She’d need to continue dominating debates; she’d need to not fade or completely lose it when Mr. Trump turns a real attack on her; and more than anything she’d need a substantive critique, even if gently delivered, of Mr. Trump to feel true and land with people. A win in Iowa or New Hampshire for Ms. Haley would reset the entire primary. That response likely derived from the ridiculous period after Jan. 6, when Ms. Haley criticized Mr. Trump harshly, then seemed to dial it back. Part of it is the smooth, pain-free way Ms. Haley entered and extricated herself from the Trump administration, after criticizing him in 2016 and endorsing Marco Rubio. This picture of Ms. Haley culminated in Vivek Ramaswamy congratulating her on her future on the Raytheon board.
